I have seen some references to buying a Detective Chest/Crate/Box, but can't find it in the Shop tabs - is this because I'm playing the iPad version? Most of the chests I can see are related to a specific room.

Unfortunately, I've never seen that. But maybe it's an achievement award for something?

Hi, arrowyn is right, you get collection chests from completing achievements. In the chest is 9 random collection items, in my experience they are normally things you will have hundreds of. It is worth doing the achievements though because alongside the collection chests you also get other chests, collectors chests (50 of each charging item), van Helsing chests (150 of each banishing item), snatcher catching chests (150 of each snatcher weapons) etc...
