I think you need to download the emoji icons first (if u don't have any already) and make it available on your keyboard list (go to the settings to choose the keyboards u are using, choose the emoji as well) and then it's available when you are using your keyboard to type.
Switch the keyboard type using the globe icon next to space bar until you see the icons.

I'd be careful doing that though. When I tried to do it my name stopped showing up in other people's friends list. I've seen some other people like that, too.
