If I recall correctly, the sportsmans chest contains, among other items, a detectives chest which contains 500 of each room key.

Yes, it's a Detective Chest, along with 5 Golden Pheonix and a hearty Dinner 
The Detective chest does indeed contain 500 of runestones, batteries, secret containers, gravitrons, golden seeds, magic shells, golden cannonballs and golden corals.
